Basketball Rules - Goaltending

There are a couple basic rules of goaltending.  First, if someone shoots the ball and the defender blocks the ball on its way down it is goaltending.  If the shot has already hit the backboard and someone blocks it that is also goaltending.  If the ball is on the cylinder and someone touches it that is goaltending.  If an offensive player touches the ball on the cylinder that is offensive goal tending.  If a player pulls on the net or the rim or touches the backboard while a shot is near the cylinder that is also goaltending.  The official basketball rules of goaltending state that if goaltending is called on a defensive player the basket counts as if it went in.  This is true for free throws, two point shots, and three pointers.  If an offensive player is called for goaltending the basket does not count even if the ball went in the basket.
