Basic Basketball Rules:
What is a Lane Violation?
There are several basketball rules involving lane violations. The lane is the area between the free throw line and the baseline. When someone is shooting free throws players from both teams can line up inside the blocks on the outside of the lane. The lane is usually a painted area or an area on the court which is a different color than the surrounding area of the court. There are multiple types of lane violations so it's important to understand each one of these rules of basketball.
-
The player shooting the free throw has ten seconds to shoot the basketball once the referee hands him the ball.
-
Once the referee hands the shooter the ball, the other players are not allowed to move beyond the area they are standing in.
-
If any player around the lane area is stepping on the line around the lane when the ball is released a lane violation will be called.
-
If the free throw shooter is touching the free throw line when he shoots a lane violation will be called.
-
If an offensive lane violation is called the free throw attempt is forfeited. If it is a one and one situation the second free throw attempt will not occur.
-
If a defensive player is called for a lane violation the shooter will be awarded another free throw, unless he has already released the shot and it went it. In that case the basket is good and you continue on as normal.
