Basketball Rules ~ Over the Back

One of the basic rules of basketball is the over the back rule.  The over the back call usually occurs when two players are going up for a rebound.  The player who has inside position has earned the right to draw a foul from the player behind him (the player who has gone over the back).  An over the back foul counts toward an individual player's total foul count as well as the team's total team fouls.

The over the back rule is a simple call for the referee to make most of the time.

"Reality: Similar to the reaching in myth, there must be contact to have a foul. Coaches holler for over the back fouls when their shorter player has seemingly better inside rebounding position and the ball is snared by a taller opponent from behind. Penalize illegal contact; don't penalize a player for being tall." Directly quoted from the official NBA website http://www.nba.com/jrnba/officials/officials_guide_section15.html
