Basketball Rules - Reaching In

According to basic basketball rules "reaching in" is a violation that results in a personal foul on the defensive player.  Reaching in usually occurs when the defensive player takes a swipe at the basketball trying to make a steal or knock the ball away.  A general rule of thumb is that if the defensive player swipes upwards a foul will not be called, but if the defender swipes at the ball from the side or downward a reaching in foul will be called by the referee.

Reaching in is a basic rule of basketball at all levels.

From the official NBA site: "Reality: Reaching in is not a foul. The term is nowhere to be found in any rulebook. Why? There must be contact to have a foul. The mere act of "reaching in," by itself, is nothing. If contact does occur, it is either a holding foul or a pushing foul" http://www.nba.com/jrnba/officials/officials_guide_section15.html
