Basketball Rules Shot Clock Violation
A general basketball rule in NCAA basketball and NBA basketball is the shot clock rule. In college the offensive team has 35 seconds to take a shot at the basket. If they do not get a shot off towards the basket within 35 seconds a shot clock violation will be called and they will lose possession of the ball. Once the shot is released it must hit the rim to reset the shot clock to 35 seconds. The NBA basketball rule is the same, only the time allotted is 24 seconds instead of 35 seconds.
Most high school basketball games do not use a shot clock, so this basketball rule does not apply. The same is true for youth basketball in most cases.
