Basketball Rules
Traveling / Walking

A basic rule of basketball at any level is the traveling call.  When an offensive player catches the basketball he can only move with the ball if he is dribbling the basketball.  He has to establish a pivot foot.  This pivot foot cannot move other than pivoting on the toe without sliding the foot.  If the pivot foot drags or moves the player has committed a traveling violation.  The other foot can move, just not the pivot foot.  When the basketball player has stopped dribbling he is no longer allowed to move his pivot foot.

Another rule of traveling is during a transitional shot or layup.  During a transitional shot or layup the player is allowed to take two steps before releasing the ball.  If more than two steps are taken travelling will be called on the player and a turnover will be the result.

Traveling is also referred to as "walking" with the ball.  You will often here the crowd moan "Walk!" during basketball games when a player comes close to traveling with the basketball.
