Basketball Rules - Walking
A walking violation is one of the most basic rules in basketball at any level. The offensive player with the basketball must establish a pivot foot once he possesses the basketball. One of his feet can move freely but the other foot, the pivot foot, can only turn on his toes. If he moves his pivot foot incorrectly he will be called for "walking". Walking is also referred to as "traveling".
When a player goes in for a layup he is allowed to touch down twice with a foot. For example, if he is shooting a right handed layup he would dribble in and then step his right foot down, then his left foot down and then lay the basketball up. If his right foot touched down again before he released the ball he would be called for walking / traveling. Walking and traveling calls are much more frequent in high school basketball and college basketball. The NBA rule for walking is more lenient and less enforced.
